🐴 Can Horses Breathe Through Their Mouth?

No—they can’t! Horses are known as obligate nasal breathers, which means they can only breathe through their nose, not their mouth. Unlike humans, who can breathe through either the nose or the mouth, horses rely entirely on their nostrils to take in air.

This unique trait helps horses stay efficient during intense exercise. Their large nasal passages are specially designed to pull in a high volume of air when they’re trotting, cantering, or galloping. But it also means that any blockage in the nose can be dangerous, because horses don’t have a backup breathing option.

At TES, we teach students to observe the whole horse—including how they breathe. Understanding how a horse’s body works is part of becoming a great rider and a confident horse person.
