Noâthey canât! Horses are known as obligate nasal breathers, which means they can only breathe through their nose, not their mouth. Unlike humans, who can breathe through either the nose or the mouth, horses rely entirely on their nostrils to take in air.
This unique trait helps horses stay efficient during intense exercise. Their large nasal passages are specially designed to pull in a high volume of air when theyâre trotting, cantering, or galloping. But it also means that any blockage in the nose can be dangerous, because horses donât have a backup breathing option.
At TES, we teach students to observe the whole horseâincluding how they breathe. Understanding how a horseâs body works is part of becoming a great rider and a confident horse person.
